THE LIGHTHOUSE PARADOX

Optical illusions, much like the room with two horses in the Temple Grandin movie, have much to do with angles, color, and perspective. I created this paradox to show the impact those things have on your perceived reality. This is a really cool illusion, which I actually stumbled upon making by accident. It is almost as if this whole paradox was a mistake. Alan Watts, says that mistakes are like hiccups that pop up unexpectantly; only when they view them in such a way, do we understand that they are just signals; that we are onto something great.

Divided and United

The Republicans and Democrats, both think that they’re right.Standing up for what we all believe in, always worth, the fight.Through this fighting, this disagreement, they miss the purpose. Not choosing to make things better for all, but making it worse. At the core, each of them is completely different, not ever wrong. It is these differences, notContinueContinue reading “Divided and United”

Feedforward or Feedback

Written by Craig Dunkleberger When you have a growth mindset, you view feedback as feedforward. That means you don’t take the advice or suggestions personally and that you use it to help you grow and improve. Let me be clear, that doesn’t mean you listen to all feedback. You have to respect the person givingContinueContinue reading “Feedforward or Feedback”

WHAT EXACTLY IS MATH WITHOUT WORDS?

Written by: Craig Dunkleberger All students have different strengths and areas that they need to grow. Some people are good at math and some are good at reading, while others excel in the arts. Unfortunatley, many of the students who excel in the arts or in math, struggle in reading. Words become huge barriers forContinueContinue reading “WHAT EXACTLY IS MATH WITHOUT WORDS?”

Your actions speak louder than words!

By Craig Dunkleberger I remember it as if it were yesterday. I was sitting at my desk when the phone rang. It rang once. It rang twice, so I picked it up and was surprised that the Director of Elementary Schools was on the other line. While interviewing new teacher candidates at central office, IContinueContinue reading “Your actions speak louder than words!”

PAPER PLATE FRACTIONS

Often times, we teach fractions only with circles, and yes, we do need to teach fractions using multiple representations. HOW FAR WILL THE FROG JUMP?

With the switch to the common core state standards (or your state’s version of the common core), there also came a movement of subject integration which really never came to full fruition. Now that they all have that, try having them explore with inch squaresContinueContinue reading “USING MEASUREMENT TO TEACH BASIC FACTS”
